Clothing & Equipment
List Revised 1997
Your pack has limited space for your clothes and personal gear,
since the main compartment will be filled with community gear
and food!
We will be bringing
along plenty to eat, so please don’t pack a private stash of candy
or food in your pack. The following items should be individually packed in
heavy duty
ziplock freezer bags. This allows you to pack a lot a clothes in a very small
space. (Please no cheap imitations!) (If this is your first trip, bring
the clothes and ziplock bags in a clothes basket to the pack party, and we’ll
show you how to do it!)
1 pair of socks /day
1 change of underwear/day (racing style swim suits work just as well!)
4 T-shirts
1 long-sleeve chamois shirt or flannel shirt
1 pair of shorts - nylon if possible
2 pair of long pants - nylon if possible (blue jeans take forever to dry!)
1 pair of light weight long underwear
1 windbreaker
1 rain suit (Make this a high quality one!)
1 hat
2 pair of shoes (make sure they a comfortable and well broken in!)
1 pair of gloves
1 towel (the new fast drying swimmers towels work very well!)
1 flashlight & spare batteries
toothbrush & tooth paste (make sure you bring a trial size tube
or one almost all gone)
non-aerosol insect repellent
one partially used up roll of toilet paper
chapstick
bandanna
sun tan lotion (#15 or higher)
1 swim suit
mosquito head-net
a small pack of handi-wipes
comb/brush
sweatshirt or insulated vest (For early or late summer trips. We’ve
been known to wake up to ice on the water buckets!)
The youth group can provide all of the following for you if you let us
know!
sleeping bag with stuff sack
back pack
life jacket
canoe
paddle
sleeping pad
In a small day pack or duffel bag, pack the following items:
- The clothes and shoes you will wear to canoe in on the first
day. These come from the above list.
- The items you will want at the
hotel on our drive up on first night.
- Clean “civilized” clothes
for the return drive after we are done canoeing. There’s no
sense hauling that all through the boundary waters and then putting
it on when we get back to the
vehicle. It will be
neat and clean and ready to wear when we stop for lunch.
- $25.00 cash to purchase
meals on the drive up and drive back.
- A second toothbrush etc. separate
from the set of toiletries you packed for the canoe trip. We don’t
plan on unpacking our backpacks at the hotel.
If you are on a trip to the Quetico half of the BWCA, which means we’re
crossing the US/Canadian border, you will need official identification! A valid
driver’s license is good enough. I’ll bring my US passport, since
I’ll be the responsible adult for all of the youth on the trip.
If you are 16 or older, you’ll need to purchase a fishing license.
Bring along about $30.00 for the license.
