Mission Meeting

July 27th, 2000

Dear Parents,

Your son or daughter is part of the largest Mission Trip First Lutheran has ever taken. They are one of thirty-six people from our congregation heading west to Libby, Montana, to build homes for those in need. It is so important to encourage our youth (and adults) when they are doing good things and praise them when they work hard. Your son or daughter or spouse has done a very special thing by wanting to give up one or two weeks of summer to go help other people! Not only that, but they worked all year so they could go on this work trip. I am so pleased to have them along!

After two weeks of being away from home, it is very important for someone to be at church to greet them with open arms. We will have so many stories to tell you! I will be calling when we are 1-2 hours away on Saturday, August 5th, so you know what time to expect us. It will top off the trip if we can you when we pull into the parking lot that evening. The approximate time is about 5:00 pm. I understand that this will be impossible for some of you as you are planning to be out of town. We will be eating a late lunch that day, so a home-cooked meal will be really appreciated that night!

Thank you for allowing your son or daughter (or spouse) to be part of our team!

In Christian Love,

Carole
Faith Development Director

Joyful, Joyful We Will Serve You
Text: Alice Stolper Peppler
Sing to tune of Beethoven's Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

Joyful, joyful we will serve you.
God of mercy, God of worth.
We will take your love to others,
We'll serve all throughout the earth.
Next door neighbor,
Friend and stranger,
Young or old,
They're loved by you.
We will share your wondrous mercy,
What they need, for you we'll do.

Feed the hungry, clothe the stranger, Visit those in prisons here,
Tend the ill, assist the helpless,
These to you are all so dear.
Love is more than words and prayer,
Love is something we must show.
Only in our acts of kindness
Your great love they'll truly know.

Let us know exploit creation,
All you've made we should protect,
Nothing is too unimportant
To destroy by our neglect.
Bird and mammals, parks and woodlands,
Water, air, and fields of grain,
Help us to preserve your works, God,
Yours to share, not ours to gain.

God of all creation, hear us,
Bless us as we follow you,
Make us grateful here to serve you
Give us joy in all we do.
Draw us ever closer to you
Let your love shine in our face
Increase our faith and help us witness,
All we meet will know your grace.

Bible Study - Gifts and Talents

What does the Bible say about gifts and Talents?

Read Mark 6:32-44

Answer the following questions

1. What problem did the disciples have?
2. Outside of the miracle, what did Jesus do?

Remember: Jesus conquered the situation by doing three things. First, he took inventory of the resources available. Second, he got organized by dividing the people into groups. Third, he asked God's blessings on the resources he had. We can follow Jesus' example.

Come up with a plan for the problem that your group was handed.

Choose one of the following problems:

#1 Problem - There is a family in our church who lost their home to a fire. How can YOU help them? They lost everything. They have five children.

#2 Problem - There is a single mom with four small children and needs winter jackets, boots, mittens and hats. She is in our congregation and does not want this announced on Sunday, even if you don't use her name. How can YOU help?

#3 Problem - There is a family in town whose father lost his job and whose mother is ill with cancer. They need your help. They have two small children. How can YOU help?

#4 Problem - There is a single man who is new to the community and has no family here and has lost a leg in a recent job-related accident. How can YOU help?

#5 Problem - There is a family in a nearby town whose son was burned severely ina fire. The insurance money has run out now and the boy still needs to have a plastic guard replaced every month for another six months and more skin grafts done. The cost of this each month is approximately $1000 per month. How can YOU help this family?
