Two women are seated at a table covered with copies of Lutheran Women Today, The Lutheran and The Northwester (A knock is heard and a third woman enters). Woman 3: "No wonder no one answered the door, this looks like the public library." Woman 2: "Oh dear, I'm so sorry; I didn't hear you knock. I guess I was too engrossed in my reading, sit down here." Woman 1: "Nice to see you, this sure is a nice (nasty) day to be out and about." Woman 3: "We've really gotten our share of nice (bad) weather this year. What are you reading?" Woman 1: "The latest issue of Lutheran Woman Today, why?" Woman 3: "Oh, I never find time to read that." Woman 2: "Do you watch 'Days of Our Lives'?" Woman 3: "Oh, yes, I never miss that!" Woman 1: "Then you have time to read Lutheran Woman Today." Woman 3: "You mean I'm supposed to give up my 'soap'?" Woman 2: "No, I didn't say that. I meant that if you have time for Bo and Hope's doings, you could find time for Lutheran Woman Today too." Woman 3:"I suppose that's true." Woman 1: "That's right. If you'd start reading it, you'd find it as absorbing as what they are doing in Salem every day. Not in the same manner, of course, but they both involve people and the goings-on of the everyday world." Woman 3: (to woman 2) "What are YOU reading?" Woman 2: "The issue of The Lutheran that came in the mail today." Woman 3: "Oh sometimes I just toss that in the garbage right away. No one reads it at our house. " Woman 1: "But if your congregation pays for your subscription, doesn't that make it sort of a gift?" Woman 3: "Oh, I just figured it was for the pastor and the church council to read so they can keep up on the business of the church." Woman 2: "But you're missing the point. We are all part of the 'church', aren't we? Certainly, we should want to know what is going on in the church." Woman 3: "Well, yeah, but it all seems so distant; besides, aren't there people elected or appointed to take care of that stuff?" Woman 1: "That's right, but we elect women to lead our congregational unit, but don't we still keep track of what's going on? So why not look at the whole picture and learn more about our church on other levels?" Woman 3: "Oh dear, in spite of myself, I am sort of being convinced. What are some of the articles in Lutheran Woman Today that you've read? " Woman 2: "Well, one month they talked about possessions, whether they were a blessing or a curse; and before that, there were articles on evangelism and on seeing the poor all around us. " Woman 1: "What I like about the magazine is that most of the articles are short, it only takes a few minutes to read through them. " Woman 2: "One of the women who comes to Bible study with me sits down and reads the whole issue as soon as it comes in the mail." Woman 3: What about The Northwester? Woman 2: "Well, I always look to see if this issue has articles about anyone I know in it. I always find out the most interesting things going on right close to us that I hadn't heard about. I especially like the articles by the Mission area leaders; they always have some good information in them. Woman 1: "I know what you mean. The last issue had lots of articles about the Global Mission Event in Decorah, Iowa in July. There were sure some exciting things that went on the way it sounded." Woman 2: "I like it because it always has the calendar of events for our Synodical Women's events. That way I can keep up with what is going on. The Lutheran has a synod insert just for us too. I always look to see if this is the issue that has that in. Woman 1: I know. But I especially like Bishop H. George Anderson's column each month, and the 'Youngchurch' section. Woman 2: I like those too, and in the October issue, were articles about being political AND a Christian at the same time, as well as evangelism and Christians in other parts of the world. There are so many good features in each one, and it seems they are always so relevant to what is going on in my life right now. Woman 3: Well, I think you've convinced me! I guess I really should be checking out those magazines a little better than I do. By the way, does this 'library' serve coffee? Adapted by Eleanor B. Johnson 10/98
