HELPS FOR A CONGREGATIONAL UNIT PRESIDENT

1. Know the structure of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the terminology. (For example, churchwide, Synodical, mission areas, etc.)

2. Know the Purpose Statement of Women of the ELCA

3. Educate the women of the congregation about the activities of the Women of the ELCA through news articles, church bulletin information, circle news and newspapers.

4. Set goals, we are an organization that exists to serve people

5. Work as a 'board', you are one of a TEAM.

6. Support one another with prayer, remembering also your conference leaders and Synodical board members.

7. Know the job description for your office. Inform the women in your congregational unit of conference, Synodical and other events. At every meeting try to have some suggestion for the women to remember or do. (It can be as short as "remember to save stamps")

8. Inform ALL of the women in your congregational unit about The Northwester, the official publication of the Northwest Wisconsin SWO; the Lutheran Woman Today, the magazine that contains the Women of the ELCA Bible Study. Encourage them to subscribe to both of these magazines.

9. Do not overwhelm new members with jobs/positions.

10. Appoint your Nominating Committee with care, they are extremely important.

11. Budget money for women to attend conventions and/or offer scholarships to attend conference/SWO functions, OR pay the registration fees for those who will attend these events and represent you.

12. The TIME OF THE MEETING is crucial!

13. Actively create a welcoming atmosphere at your meetings.

14. Invite new members face-to-face, and OFFER TO PICK THEM UP. Call to remind women of meetings.

15. Plan special programs several times a year.

16. Consider holding quarterly general meetings.

17. Keep the business meeting moving. Do not dwell on unimportant items.

18. LET GO OF OLD, UNPRODUCTIVE HABITS!
