Here's a little idea from the Lake Nebagamon congregation that we have done for several years to everyone's great enjoyment. A request came from the Sunday School that they really wanted to participate in the festivities on Palm Sunday in their own way. The Sunday School made big Palm trees out of old carpet rolls. They looked almost real. We put them up in the aisle of the sanctuary. For the procession on Palm Sunday two of the Sunday School children were the donkey (one child under the head, one in the back - the donkey had been crafted by our Sunday School superintendent). The donkey was led by Jesus. Last year a disabled boy, Jonathan, was Jesus. He wanted that part so badly. We checked with the kids and they all felt that it was okay for Jesus to be in a wheel chair. This made Jonathan's day! Led by Jesus and the donkey, the rest of the Sunday School children walked in waving palm leaves. Then the donkey sat down (this was tricky as the front and the back needed to cooperate) and the entire Sunday school sang a few songs before joining their parents in the pews. Since we have many young families at Trinity this was quite the hit and meaningful to the children. Even the older folks enjoyed their enthusiasm. It was probably not the most liturgical start for the service, but the message came through to young and old.
