College Scholarship Grant Program

Mission

The First Lutheran Foundation College Scholarship Grant Program, henceforth called "The Scholarship Grant Program," is established to promote the educational program stipulated by Mabel Otteson in her will providing financial aid to persons who are active members of First Lutheran Church, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to encourage and foster their commitment to the Church and the community.

Funding

The funding for this program comes from the Mabel Otteson Education Fund of the First Lutheran Foundation and is limited to no more than 5% of said fund as of January 1 of the year used.

Administration

The Program Committee of the Foundation will administer the program with the approval of the Foundation Board of Directors. They will advertise, receive, and review applications and submit names and recommendations to the Board for approval.

Program Committee Responsibilities

1. The Committee shall announce the availability of Scholarship Grant application forms in the church office no later than February 1 of the year issued and shall notify the congregation through the newsletter and/or chapel talks, etc. clearly stating the time, the first Friday of April, beyond which applications will not be accepted.

2. The Committee shall receive the applications and, as a Committee, read, review, discuss, and perhaps even interview applicants if need be.

3. When the Committee has approved the applicants, their names shall be submitted to the Board for approval before any funds are promised or distributed.

Applicant Responsibilities

1. The Applicant shall be an active member of the congregation and shall, as part of the application, write a brief summary of his/her life within the Church. Active membership by definition is communing, contributing, worshiping, and serving.

2. Beside the membership summary, the Applicant shall write a brief paragraph on the application sharing their involvement at school and in the community.

3. The Applicant shall be enrolled in or accepted by a college, university, technical college, or comparable institution of learning for a full academic study load and shall, along with the application, include a transcript of grades.

4. The Applicant shall have and maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average to be eligible.

5. Promptness is a virtue. An application after the stated deadline will not be accepted (except in very unusual circumstances and prior arrangements are made).

6. The Applicant could be asked for a goal-statement stating what their goals are in going to college.

7. The appropriate High Schools and newspaper(s) shall be contacted early enough before graduation so that recipients of Scholarship Grants may be recognized.
