The Five Fingered Prayer Thumb: The first "finger" in your prayer is your thumb. It is the nearest to you, so begin by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. As C. S. Lewis once said, "To pray for our loved ones is a 'sweet duty'". They need God's love. Pointing Finger: This "finger" in your prayer is for those who teach, instruct and heal. This could include teachers, doctors, and pastors. They need your support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. Tallest Finger: This "finger" in your prayer reminds us of our leaders. Pray for our President, the Congress, leaders in business and industry, Synod and national church staff, and school administrators. These people shape our nation and help to guide public opinion. They need God's guidance. Ring Finger: All muscisians know that our ring finger is our weakest finger. It reminds us to pray for those who are weak, in pain, in trouble or in want. They need your prayers every day and night. You cannot pray too much for them. Little Finger: This "finger" in our prayer takes its cue from the fact that this is our smallest finger. It helps us know where to place ourselves in relation to God and others. After you have prayed for the needs of others, your own needs will be in the proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively. |
