Companion Synod Sunday

Sunday, May 6, 2001, has been designated "Companion Synod Sunday" by our Synod partnership committees. The day provides an opportunity to celebrate our global partners in the Meru Diocese, Tanzania, and in the Lutheran Church of El Salvador. The two committees have several suggestions to help you plan a special day for your congregations.

Plan an intergenerational event that focuses on learning more about Tanzania and El Salvador. Learn about how the people live, what they eat, their clothing, worship styles and music.

Invite speakers from the partnership committees to share their experience with the people of our partnership countries.

Extend the celebration into worship: include our global partners in your worship prayers, and choose African and Latin American hymns from "With One Voice."

The Meru Partnership committee collects medical supplies for the Dispensaries run by the Church. Place a box near the entrance to your worship space labeled "Medicines for Tanzania." Over-the-counter medicines like tylenol and vitamins are desperately needed. Contact Pat O., Parish Nurse at Pentecost Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, for a detailed list.

El Salvador has recently suffered from devastating earthquakes. They will soon begin the long process of rebuilding and/or relocating. funds are needed to assist them in this process. Take a special offering and donate it to the International Disaster Response, earmarked for "El Salvador Earthquakes."

Use the resources in this month's congregational packet - a beautiful brochure on our partnership with the Meru Diocese, and worship resources and a history of our partnership with the Church in El Salvador.

If you need more ideas or assistance with your plans, feel free to contact members of the Meru Diocese and El Salvador partnership committees.
