Cross Within a Cross

As they led Jesus away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus.    Luke 23:26

A comparison of Godpel accounts of Jesus trial and crucifixion, using an African Bible study method, with slight variation as noted on reverse. I provide the method in its original style for your information.

Selected Texts: Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 18:28-19:42

African Bible Study

In this process only one Bible is needed. The selected text will be read three times, with time for silence and time for guided conversation and reflection. During this style of study it is important to not be critical of each other’s responses. Also note, any participant may be silent or pass during the sharing.

1)      Listen as the text is read for the one thing that strikes you as important or significant or unusual. Read the text. Then, allow silence. It is good to allow at least three minutes. (this is tough. We always want to speak, but this is opportunity for the Holy spirit to speak to us!) Each person then shares their thought(s).

2)      Listen for something in the text that relates to your own situation or life. Read the text. (If possible, use a different reader.) Allow silence. Each person shares their thoughts.

3)      Listen for what you hear God asking you to do. Or, what challenge do you hear in the passage. Read the text. (Again, a different reader if possible.) Allow silence. Each person shares their thoughts.

4)      Read the text a final time and close with prayer.
