SAYING GOOD-BYE Pastoral Care to Those Whose Congregation is Closing A letter sent out in March, 1995, from pastor Erik Johnson explaining the need for a final decision meeting Dear Member of Vang Lutheran Church: At special meeting of Vang Lutheran Congregation held Sunday, September 4, 1994 a resolution to dissolve Vang Lutheran Church was voted on. At that time, this resolution did not pass by the 2/3 majority necessary. At the annual meeting of the Vang congregation it was again discussed and it was decided that the situation was such that another vote should be taken. A revision of the resolution was sent out along with a ballot that members were to return. The result of this "mail-in ballot" was 22 in favor of dissolving the congregation and 7 against. Following this meeting, we checked with a lawyer about the appropriateness of conducting a vote to dissolve a congregation in this way. According to the laws affecting congregational corporations in the state of North Dakota there needs to be a vote at the meeting itself (not a mail-in vote). It turns out an absentee or proxy type vote will not work either. What this all means is that we need to have another meeting. So we have revised the resolution one more time. The resolution now includes a "whereas" which gives the results of the "mail-in" ballot. The meeting to vote on the resolution to dissolve Vang Lutheran Church will be on Tuesday, march 21, 1995 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Wallace and Irene Lee. Your presence at this meeting is requested and strongly suggested. We need as many members of Vang congregation present as possible. I will be present at the meeting to try to answer any questions that I can. This is an important and big step to even be thinking about dissolving a congregation. We realize that this is not something that we want to do, but that we find necessary to do. And we do not do it lightly. May the Lord bless our discussion and decision. Sincerely, Erik E. Johnson, Pastor |
