JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Preschool Teacher (First Lutheran Preschool)
Supervision: Education Committee and Associate Pastor
Purpose: To plan and teach all classroom activities related to the
Preschool of First Lutheran Church for the purpose of fostering
growth and learning among
preschool students in a Christian setting.
Responsibilities: Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the
Associate Pastor, the Education Committee, and the Congregation Council, the
following
constitute the major responsibilities of the preschool teacher:
1. The teacher is responsible for implementing, planning and supervising
the program for the class, establishing curriculum and developing
units. In developing
units, the teacher will include art, movement, language arts and music activities.
The teacher must be well prepared and have all necessary materials ready
to execute a daily lesson plan.
2. The teacher should create a positive learning atmosphere, making certain
that he/she meets the needs of the individual child in terms of social, emotional
and intellectual development.
3. The teacher must make certain that the classroom is pleasant, orderly
and conducive to learning. This includes displaying student work or unit-related
displays in hallways and on the upstairs bulletin board. The teacher should
also make available age-appropriate learning materials, establish science
centers
and learning stations within the classroom.
4. The teacher must prepare written evaluations for each student and have
an individual conference with the parents of each student in late January
or early
February.
5. The teacher shall conduct a parent orientation meeting and student open
house the week before classes begin.
6. The teacher must plan and present a Christmas program and spring program.
7. The teacher must communicate with any parent as the need arises regarding
the child's abilities or progress.
8. The teacher must plan and execute field trips (approximately one per month).
9. The operational duties of the preschool (i.e. supply requests, correspondence,
inventory, programs, bulletin boards, mail sorting, records of fire drills,
maintenance requests, petty cash, etc.) will be shared equally between all
teachers in consultation
with the Preschool Director.
Working Conditions
1. The teacher must see that the classroom, hallway and gym are kept clean
(tables washed, carpet vacuumed, etc.). All toys, shelves and materials must
be cleaned
before the start of the new school year, and the kitchen must be kept clean.
2. The teacher must write a monthly parent newsletter and communicate with
parents regarding school activities.
3. The teacher must arrange for and complete 16 hours of continuing education
and 16 hours of in-service each year in order for the Preschool to maintain
its license.
4. The teacher must attend preschool staff meetings once a month, keep summaries
of each staff meeting/in-service on file, and work in cooperation with the
Preschool Director.
5. The teacher must keep records of registration, health forms, and permission
slips necessary for state licensing.
6. The teacher must attend all Education Committee meetings of First Lutheran
Church.
7. In case of absence, the teacher is responsible for securing a substitute
and providing a teaching plan for the substitute teacher to follow.
8. The teacher shall check the preschool mail slot in the church office each
day class is in session.
9. The teacher shall communicate all preschool-related scheduling to the
Office Manager of First Lutheran Church for the purpose of calendar coordination
and
publicity.
Qualifications
1. Faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to sharing that faith with preschool
children and parents.
2. Teaching qualifications (degree, background, certifications, etc.).
3. Outgoing personality and ability to work with preschool age children and
their parents.
4. High organizational skills.
5. Agrees to background check, if requested.
