COORDINATING TEAM PASTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Bethany Lutheran Church, Rice Lake, WI
I. ROLE
The Coordinating Team Pastor shall preach and teach the Word of God,
conduct worship services, administer the sacraments and provide spiritual
and pastoral leadership in accordance with the Evangelical Church
of America and the constitution and bylaws of this congregation.
The Coordinating Team Pastor is not solely responsible for the doing
of ministry, but shall empower and equip congregational members to
minister to each other, the community and beyond.
The Coordinating Team Pastor shall be the keeper of the vision and
shall work with the Church Council to determine, clarify and articulate
the values, mission and Strategic Plan of the congregation.
The Coordinating Team Pastor will supervise and support all staff
members as they carry out the day to day ministry of the congregation.
II. ACCOUNTABILITY
- The Coordinating Team Pastor
is directly accountable to the Church Council and ultimately Bethany
Lutheran Church.
- The Coordinating Team Pastor
shall work with the Church Council and communicate regularly on
all congregational policies and programs.
III. SUPERVISORY
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Supervisory role will include:
- Ensure that the direction
of worship is consistent with the mission, values and Strategic
Plan of Bethany Lutheran Church.
- Coordinate and supervise all
church personnel. Facilitate regular staff meetings. He/she shall
help the staff communicate clearly to minimize potential conflict
and maximize fulfillment of the congregation’s ministries.
- Coordinate
shared responsibilities of pastoral staff while fostering a collegial
atmosphere.
- Prepare and conduct annual evaluations
of the Education Coordinator, Office Manager and Youth Director.
- Provide
input to the Personnel Committee regarding the annual evaluations
of the Team Pastor, Visitation Pastor and Music Director.
IV. GENERAL
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the pastoral ministry of the congregation and supervision
of the ministries.
- This position requires great
flexibility in hours available for work, including evenings and
weekends. The Pastor should be in the office a sufficient amount
of time for accessibility to members of the congregation and for
regular communication with the church staff.
- Respond to emergency
situations which arise in the Church family.
- Take responsibility
for developing, supervising, assigning and supporting the ministries
including but not limited to: Worship, Youth, Evangelism, Education,
Visitation, Music, Counseling, Stewardship, Financial, Ecumenical
and Mission Concerns.
- A supporting role will be fulfilled
by the Team Pastor.
V. DUTIES
SHARED WITH THE TEAM PASTOR
A. Worship
- Preaching and administration
of the sacraments. All pastors shall serve as preachers and
share in the preaching tasks.
- Share in coordinating the church
year by the utilization of resources for innovative and meaningful
worship experiences.
- Arrange for baptisms, weddings
and funerals. The pastors on the staff shall share these services
with sensitivity to the personal wishes of the families.
- Together
with the Team Pastor, Music Director and the Worship and
Music Committee, plan and coordinate the use of lay resources
in the worship experience for the benefit of all ages.
B. Youth and Family
- Together with the Team Pastor,
Youth Director, Education Coordinator and Youth Ministry Board
(hereinafter referred to as Youth Ministry Team), will plan
and coordinate the utilization of the church’s resources
for ministry to the youth of the congregation.
- The Youth Ministry Team will
develop youth ministry with explicit awareness of youth subcultures,
and develop and encourage the growth of youth participation
in the ministry of the church.
- The Youth Ministry Team, along
with parents, sponsors and mentors will challenge and encourage
youth in their faith response to Jesus Christ.
C. Evangelism
- Together with the Team Pastor
(hereinafter referred to as the Ministry Team) and the Evangelism
Committee, will plan and coordinate the utilization of the
church’s
resources for the evangelistic work of the congregation.
- The Ministry
Team and the appropriate leaders will develop and encourage
the evangelistic outreach of the congregation. Visitors and/or
prospective members will be promptly contacted.
- The Ministry Team and gifted “evangelists” will
intentionally strive to bring the message of salvation through Jesus
Christ to uncommitted persons of this community.
- The Ministry Team
will help create an intentional environment of Christian hospitality
in the congregation.
- The Ministry Team will develop
an assimilation program for new members to foster participation
and involvement in the life and ministry of Bethany Lutheran
Church.
D. Education
- The Ministry Team along with
the Education Coordinator and Education Committee will plan
and coordinate the utilization of the church’s resources
for the education of all age groups of the congregation.
- The Ministry Team
will encourage and support lay resource teachers for all age
groups.
E. Visitation
- The Ministry Team, along with
the Visitation Pastor and Health Cabinet, will plan and coordinate
the utilization of the congregation’s resources in visiting
the hospitalized, shut-ins and others in need of special pastoral
care.
- The Ministry Team will coordinate
the systematic visitation of the membership and prospective
new members.
F. Counseling
- Assure that Pastors will be available
for counseling and make appropriate referrals when necessary.
G. Stewardship
- The Ministry Team along with
the Stewardship Committee will plan and coordinate the utilization
of congregation’s resources in developing and maintaining an
effective concept of responsible Christian stewardship as caretakers
of God’s kingdom.
H. Financial
- The Ministry Team and the Church
Council will plan and coordinate the utilization of the church’s
resources in meeting all of its financial obligations in accordance
with its budget.
I. Ecumenical
- The Ministry Team and Mission
Concerns will plan and coordinate the utilization of the congregation’s
resources in working with other faith groups to foster a spirit of
cooperation and united concern within the community so that the witness
to Christ’s redeeming love may be whole and complete.
J. Mission
- The Ministry Team and Mission
Concerns will plan and coordinate the utilization of the congregation’s
resources in developing and maintaining the highest possible
degree of commitment to mission outreach, both within the
local community and throughout the world.
K. Communications
- The Ministry Team and Mission
Concerns will plan and coordinate the utilization of the congregation’s
resources in effectively and efficiently communicating the
work of the church so that as many as possible will be exposed
to the good news of God working in Christ in our midst.
L. Property
- The Ministry Team and the Property
Committee will ensure that the property of the church is maintained
in the best possible condition and that adequate planning is done
to meet projected needs as they arise.
M. Additional
Areas of Responsibility
- Develop and implement a team
ministry among the staff, with concern for inter-staff communication
and coordination of staff functions.
- Present a monthly report to
the Church Council.
- Supervise the content of the
monthly newsletter and the bulletin for worship services.
- Ensure
that regular office hours are maintained by all staff.
- Ensure that
pastoral emergencies requiring pastoral attention have priority
over time off for pastors.
VI. SUMMARY
- Every effort is made to use the
individual strengths of the Ministry Team to meet the multitude
of opportunities for ministry.
- The Ministry Team will utilize
individual talents and skills in a coordinated effort to effectively
carry out the mission of the church.
- Facilitate the utilization of
the Ministry Team’s strengths to best compliment each other.
VII. JOB
PERFORMANCE REVIEW
An annual Job Performance Review will be conducted by the Personnel
Committee and reported to the Church Council. During the review,
the job description may also be reviewed and modified as needed.
VIII. SELF-CARE
- Take time to model family life
and personal life.
- Take time for spiritual renewal
through daily devotions, meditation and spiritual retreats.
- Take
time for continuing education and study.
- Accountable to the Church
Council for sharing personal insights in spiritual, emotional
and physical renewal.
