Associate Pastor of Prayer and Caring Ministries

Introductory Statement:

Trinity Lutheran Church seeks to nurture people as they grow in discovering their baptismal identity as children of God and members of the communion of saints. As well as seeing to the ordinary responsibilities of Word and Sacrament ministry, the Associate Pastor of Prayer and Caring Ministries is the lead staff person for coordinating Trinity's efforts in its prayer ministries and in organizing the laity as they care for the needs of both congregational members and the greater community.

Qualifications

The Pastor must see this position as a ministry to and with the people of God known as Trinity Lutheran Church. Commitment comes from an understanding of God's love for us and God's desire for us to make the Good News of Jesus Christ come alive in tangible ways in each person. A willingness to grow in faith and in this position as the ministry system of Trinity evolves is a requirement.

Specific experience will include a Masters of Divinity degree with a desire and commitment to join a leadership team committed to seeking continually new ways to build God's kingdom and make disciples. Passions for ministry with God's call to love and serve our neighbor must be clearly evident. The Pastor must be able to work well with all staff, volunteers and adults of all ages. A commitment to team ministry and a spirit of cooperation is essential.

Description of Responsibilities

The pastor will:

1. Administratively

A) Attend and actively participate in congregational and council meetings, as well as work with various task forces pertinent to personal responsibilities and the vitality of the congregation.

B) Provide input to the Lead Team Pastor and the Executive Committee on church employee performance.

2. Pastorally

A) Conduct regular and special worship services as agreed upon by the pastoral staff and church council.

B) Pray regularly for the vitality of the congregation and the personal and spiritual welfare of its members.

C) Provide pastoral counsel to members during times of crisis, acting as a referral to community services as appropriate.

D) Minister to members of the congregation according to their needs, visiting them and administering communion in their homes, nursing homes or hospitals as needed.

E) Provide a preaching ministry, as mutually agreed upon by the pastoral staff, to the congregation based on the Scriptures and liturgies of the ELCA.

F) Perform baptisms, affirmations of baptisms, weddings and funerals as needed, in a spirit of cooperation with the other pastors.

G) Set aside time on a regular basis for theological and pastoral reading and study.

H) Make diligent use of continuing education time and funds to engage in challenging study programs directed towards improving pastoral skills.

I) Coordinate and develop congregational prayer ministries, such as the Prayer Chain.

J) Coordinate and develop lay ministries for the purpose of caring for the personal and spiritual needs of the congregation's members.

3. Educationally

A) Share in the definition of the total educational ministry for adults, youth and children in the congregation.

B) Share in the educational ministry of the congregation, teaching first communion and confirmation classes and adult education.

4. Community and World Outreach-wise

A) Work with appropriate community organizations to further the missions and goals of the congregation.

B) Participate in local ELCA and ecumenical groups, emphasizing inter-denominational fellowship and service.

C) Work with the congregation to develop awareness of evangelism and personal witness to the community at large.

D) Work with the congregation to develop awareness of and increase involvement in the arena of social ministries.

E) Minister to persons coming to the church for assistance, regarding them with honor, exercising good judgement and helping them as we are able.

Position Assignments

The Pastor will:

1. Coordinate the pastoral team in seeing to the congregation's pastoral care needs.

2. Coordinate and develop lay ministries of prayer and congregational caring.

3. Provide pastoral guidance to the Social Ministries committee.

4. Provide pastoral guidance to the Evangelism committee, in a spirit of cooperation with the Pastor of Outreach, inasmuch as they are involved in prayer and caring ministries.

5. Coordinate the schedule of pastoral educational offerings to adults.

Accountability

You are called by the congregation and ultimately responsible to the congregation through the church council. However, you will work cooperatively and receive support from the Lead Team Pastor who will uphold you in prayer. Furthermore, the Lead Team Pastor will strive to assist you in reaching your full potential as you grow in faith and contribute to Trinity's goals for prayer and caring ministries. Other pastors and ministry directors pledge their support and will work cooperatively with you. Opportunity for review and goal setting will take place annually

Work Relationships

The pastor will:

1. Emphasize and value the fostering of a team spirit among the staff of Trinity Lutheran Church and recognize the importance and role of each staff member in the life and ministry of the congregation.

2. Be a mentor, companion, resource and role model for the people of Trinity.

3. Foster and strive to grow a spirit of Christian community within the people of Trinity.

4. Work cooperatively with other ministry directors and appropriate committees and auxiliaries to educate and keep adults informed about ministry possibilities.
